Unstable: Netflix's Hidden Comedy Gem You Shouldn’t Miss!

Confession time: I wasn’t expecting to get hooked on Netflix’s Unstable so quickly. But just a few episodes in, I was completely drawn into its quirky charm and laugh-out-loud moments.

Rob Lowe teams up with his real-life son, John Owen Lowe, to bring us a fresh father-son dynamic in a tech-driven world that is anything but boring.

Plot Overview

Unstable follows Ellis Dragon (played by Rob Lowe), a charismatic but eccentric biotech genius, who's struggling after the death of his wife. Enter his son, Jackson Dragon (John Owen Lowe), who is the polar opposite of his father—low-key and emotionally grounded. Jackson is reluctantly pulled into the chaos of his dad’s life to help keep the family’s biotech company afloat, while Ellis spirals out of control.

This series is a mix of workplace comedy, family drama, and all-out absurdity. As Ellis works through his grief in unpredictable ways, the people around him, from his colleagues to his son, try to keep everything running smoothly—if that’s even possible when your boss and father is borderline unhinged.

Scene Review

One of my favorite scenes is when Jackson tries to rein in his father during a particularly bizarre product presentation. Ellis starts with something completely unrelated, launches into one of his famous monologues, and Jackson—bless him—tries to steer the conversation back to something sane.

You can see the frustration on Jackson’s face as he tries to balance helping his father without losing his own mind in the process.

The chemistry between Rob and John Owen Lowe is just effortless, and you feel the real-life father-son bond translate on-screen. This dynamic makes for some of the most authentic and funny moments in the show.

Why I Like It

The blend of heart and humor in Unstable is what makes it so good. Sure, it’s full of quirky characters and laugh-out-loud scenes, but there’s also an emotional undercurrent that keeps you invested.

Rob Lowe’s portrayal of Ellis shows a character that is not just an eccentric genius, but a grieving husband who’s navigating life in the only way he knows how—through chaos.

Meanwhile, John Owen Lowe’s Jackson adds a grounded, relatable element as the “normal” one in the family who has to deal with his father’s antics.

The series doesn’t just rely on slapstick humor or outlandish situations. It has heart. You see moments of genuine father-son bonding, even if they're covered in layers of sarcasm and awkwardness.

It makes Unstable more than just a sitcom—it’s a show about navigating complicated relationships, mental health, and family, all wrapped in sharp wit.

Why You Should Watch

If you’re a fan of workplace comedies with a twist or love a good family dynamic at the heart of a show, Unstable is perfect for you.

Plus, it offers something unique: Rob Lowe in his element, doing what he does best—playing a charming, yet erratic character with comedic brilliance.

But it’s John Owen Lowe’s performance that gives the show a fresh edge. Their father-son duo isn’t just a gimmick; it works and elevates the entire series.

Fun Fact

This isn’t the first time Rob and John Owen Lowe have worked together. The father-son duo has collaborated behind the scenes before, with John Owen contributing to writing projects that his dad starred in. It’s clear their real-life rapport helps make Unstable what it is: a show that’s both hilarious and heartfelt.

Final Thoughts

At its core, Unstable is about family, growth, and the unpredictability of life—all wrapped up in a witty package. If you're in the mood for something light-hearted yet meaningful, Unstable should be at the top of your watchlist.

Oh, and did I mention Season 2 just came out? Yup, Netflix recently dropped the second season, and it picks up right where we left off.

With more chaos, more laughs, and deeper explorations of the father-son dynamic. If you loved the first season, then season 2 is a must-watch, promising even bigger twists and hilarious moments.

So, ready to embrace the chaos all over again?
