The Princess Diaries Movies: A Royal Return!

Confession Time: Shut Up! It’s official, The Princess Diaries franchise is making a comeback! On the 5th of October, Anne Hathaway, the beloved star who brought Princess Mia Thermopolis to life, took to TikTok to break the news we’ve all been waiting for: The Princess Diaries 3 is happening!

To make things even more exciting, the movie will be directed by none other than the brilliant Adele Lim, known for her incredible work on Crazy Rich Asians and Joy Ride. It's safe to say that this next chapter is in good hands.

Let’s take a walk down memory lane before we get too excited about what’s to come in this third instalment.

The Princess Diaries (2001)

The first movie was released back in 2001, introducing us to Mia Thermopolis, a socially awkward teen who discovers she’s the heir to the throne of Genovia. Directed by Garry Marshall, the film was filled with heart, humour, and those unforgettable makeover montages.

Anne Hathaway made her big-screen debut, capturing the hearts of audiences with her endearing portrayal of Mia, while Julie Andrews added her royal touch as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, Mia’s grandmother.

The film beautifully showed Mia’s transformation—not just from a nerdy teen to a princess but also from someone unsure of herself to a confident young woman embracing her new responsibilities. From the funny mishaps to the emotional moments, this movie became a classic in the realm of modern-day fairytales.

The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004)

The sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, followed in 2004 and brought even more royal drama. Mia, now a college graduate, returns to Genovia, only to discover she has to marry within 30 days to remain queen.

This instalment was packed with laugh-out-loud moments, a blossoming romance with Nicholas (played by Chris Pine), and of course, more of Julie Andrews’s delightful grace.

While it didn’t quite reach the same level of love as the first film, it was still charming and fun, keeping fans hopeful that one day we’d see more of Mia’s journey.

The Return of Genovia – The Princess Diaries 3

Fast forward to 2024, and it feels like a dream come true. After years of speculation and fan theories, we are finally getting the royal reunion we’ve been waiting for. Anne Hathaway’s TikTok announcement was the perfect surprise, giving fans of the franchise something to rejoice about.

With Adele Lim taking the reins as director, it’s safe to assume that the next chapter will bring both the warmth and wit we loved in the original films, along with a fresh perspective.

What could we expect from Mia this time? Will she still be queen of Genovia? Will we see a new generation of royals? While much of the plot is still under wraps, one thing is certain: the world is ready for more of Mia’s royal adventures.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’ve grown up watching The Princess Diaries or discovered it more recently, there’s no denying the franchise’s timeless appeal. Anne Hathaway’s portrayal of Mia is iconic, and having Adele Lim at the helm promises a fresh and exciting continuation of the story.

I’m personally thrilled to see what’s next for Princess Mia, and if the magic of the first two films is any indication, we’re in for something special.  Keep your tiaras polished – Genovia is calling once again!
